School food activities in New Caledonia

Pacific Territories Regional Project for Sustainable Ecosystem Management  

(PROTEGE) 

Feeding program (Lunch - including entrée, main and dessert)


Started: 2022

Status: Ongoing, concludes in 2024, with plans to upscale


National


Reach: 4 schools, Day and Boarding schools (mainly Public), Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday during the school year

School level: Primary school, Secondary school (6 - 18 years)


Program goals:

  • Promote local food production and consumption 

  • Improve employment of vulnerable populations 

  • Improve food security (children have access to at least 1 nutritious meal per day) 

  • Improve nutrition of children  

  • Deliver on policy (20-35% of locally produced food in school  

  • Building resilience and sustainability of the primary agriculture sector 

  • Prevent or mitigate over-nutrition 


The project is being implemented by SPC and SPREP (South Pacific Regional Environmental Program) as Pacific regional organisations.  Ministry of Agriculture Chamber and Ministry of Ecology, local organic producer groups, and schools are all engaged in the program. 


 

Northern Province Boarding School Feeding Program 


Feeding program (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)


Started: Early 1900's

Status: Ongoing


Reach: Public Boarding schools, Monday-Friday (breakfast, lunch) Sunday-Thursday (Dinner) during the school year

School level: Primary school, Secondary school (grade 1 - 9)


Program goals:

  • Improve the quality of the food served 

  • Meet nutritional and or health goals of students 

  • Improve diversity of meal served 


 

Pacific School Food Lab

Started: 2014

Status: Ongoing


National


Reach: Several Public and Private schools

School level: Middle and High schools


Pacific Food Lab coordinates the set up and liaison between canteen chefs and local producers.  Thereafter, canteen chefs manage the project within their institution. The school facilitates the practical and financial aspects subsidised by the government.
